Parental Tips

(A) How to handle your toddler’s emotion

First and most effective way – label his feeling!

How to do it?

1. Print out different type of expression in colours, cut it out and paste it on a plastics plate. Each expression each plate.

2. Create a corner or section to put up the plastics plate according to your toddler’s mood. Example: I’m ________ (eg: Happy/Sad/Angry) Today!

3. Put up the ‘Happy Face’ everyday. Each time when his/her mood turns to sad or angry, change the plastics plate according to his/her mood to replace the ’Happy Face’!

4. It works very well when the toddler discover his favourite ’Happy Face’ is gone and replaced with ‘Sad Face’. Usually they don’t like the ‘Sad Face’

5. Because of this, they will stop crying and control their emotion. Or you can use this method to ask them to stop crying by helping them to label their own feeling.

6. Most importantly - taking this opportunity to talk/explain to them so that daddy & mummy can put-up the happy face again! Remember, you must always talk and find out from them why are they crying. Understand how they feel and what is their mind are crucial!

6. When this is successful or they are showing you a smile, change the sad or whichever expression to “Happy Face” with praise!

7. Encourage them continuously so that they understand the emotion control by expressing it out. It also help to develop their EQ!

Hope this tip helps you well if you face with an emotional toddler.
